The Test of the Human Spirit
ByThere is a lot of negative news and it is hard to find the good stuff.
Never in recent times have we worried more.
There is unrest in the Middle East, food shortages, lingering unemployment, higher energy costs, government debt issues, and evidence of global warming.
The human spirit is the best weapon to carry us through this melee.
Hidden in the headlines these days because it has been such a constant is the march of technology. In the background, because it is not interesting is the progress of bioengineering to produce more dependable grains. The investment in alternative energy is growing on all quarters. Computers can now understand language and may soon improve life faster than humans are capable.
Energy is the source of all life. Energy is the perpetual engine and never in short supply. We tap into energy not using drill bits and blasting caps, but by using creativity and innovation.
Humans have to go through the process like a refinery to create their connection to this energy. At the top of the hierarchy is positive thinking, optimism, and happiness. In “The Happiness Advantage” Shawn Achor shows we are much more productive when we start happy.
Our brain chemicals produce dopamine when mental thoughts are positive. Dopamine allows us to focus and operate at peak performance. Working in the flow or the zone has been agreed by all levels of psychology and neurology to be our happiest and most productive state.
Energy powers the cells and powers the galaxy. How do we start the charge in our own bodies? We eat healthy and we get fit. We improve our skills and we improve our lives. I just picked up a book on surfing and this Olympic trainer says in all sports we must improve the total body performance to improve in any sport.
To enjoy lives we must improve all areas. Regardless of what is happening in the world, we are only here for a few years. We can’t say at the end it would have been better if there would have been better conditions. We can create our own.
We can’t just focus on what is happening around us, we must focus on what is happening in us. We need physical fitness. We need to grow our competencies. We need to grow our community. We need to increase our connection to life whether it be through nature, altruism, or contribution.
We need to think of our personal and the greater good.
Things may get worse before they get better, but it is better to be on the accelerator than the brake.
